The practice of Osteopathic Manual Therapy is conducted through osteopathic assessment of anatomical deviations that are expressed by asymmetry, restriction of normal motion, tissue texture change and subjective complaints. These dysfunctional findings may effectively interfere with proper bodily function of some or all of the body’s systems. The treatment of these findings is through the application of osteopathic principles: The body is capable of self-regulation, self-healing, and health maintenance. Structure and function are reciprocally interrelated. Rational treatment is based upon an understanding of the basic principles of body unity, self-regulation, and the interrelationship of structure and function.
Osteopathy is concerned with the manner in which the biomechanics of the musculoskeletal system are integrated with and support the entire body physiology. Manual treatment of the cause of dysfunction is done by working with the patient’s body to restore ease and prepare it for self-healing. Osteopathy seeks the health within the body.
